Coronary heart disease is one of the most common ailments. It is caused by a condition called the arthrosclerosis and it is caused due to the collection of fat and cholesterol in the arteries. When these substances accumulate and become large blocks, they are called atheromas or plaque in simple terms. |
Plaque restricts the blood flow to the heart muscle making the heart weak and causing it to stop functioning some times. The coronary arteries are responsible for supplying oxygen to the heart and the muscles. When fat and cholesterol accumulates in these small vessels, then it leads to coronary heart disease. It is also called ischemic heart disease.
If even one artery gets blocked with cholesterol or plaque, the heart does not function properly. When the heart muscles do not function properly, then they begin to die. They cause pain in the person and this condition is called angina. Most often the symptoms of heart attack are severe. If you see a diagram of the heart then the blood supply to the heart and the blocks in the arteries will be clearly indicated in blue.
The blocks in the artery is cleared using a surgery called coronary bypass. A bypass surgery helps to clear the plaque from the arteries. In most cases, this surgery is successful and definitely improves the quality of life for the patient. People also take medications to reduce the cholesterol and plaque in the arteries. However, a coronary bypass surgery is more effective for reducing the pain.
