A coronary sinus is a collection of veins present in the heart. The collection of veins together forms a large blood vessel. It is present in all animals and human beings. Its main function is to collect blood in the myocardium region of the heart. |
A sinus literally means a cavity. The coronary sinus opens up into the auricle and it keeps returning the blood from the substances of the heart. Basically the sinus is functioning as a stop gap when it is receiving blood from various parts of the body like the cardiac veins, and the atrium of the heart. The body needs a regulator to control the excess blood flow to the heart. Therefore, the coronary sinus acts as a regulator that acts against the heart being overloaded. It is a very important function and the heart needs it. A human being is alive because he or she has a functioning heart. However, just like any other machine the heart is also capable of failure. There are several backup measures within the human body that protect the heart. And, the coronary sinus is one such backup measure to ensure that the heart keeps functioning.
However, even the coronary sinus can get blocked by cholesterol and fat. It could be very dangerous for a person who is living with such a condition. If cholesterol happens to block the sinus, then the heart would not have a backup, and will end up taking an overload of blood flow. This could directly lead to heart failure.
