Removing Plaque From Coronary Artery

The atherosclerotic plaque tends to collect in the arteries for several people. It starts restricting the blood flow to the heart and causes chest pain and other heart related conditions. The plaque that collects in the coronary blood vessels causes chronic heart problems like myocardial infraction.

There are a few ways to treat this condition and methods to clear the plaque from the blood vessels. One of the most common treatments for removal of plaque is the percutaneous angioplasty. The method can sound invasive but it is not. The method involves inflating a balloon in the lumen of the artery and applies pressure on the plaque by pressurizing the balloon.

The plaque is making the artery to behave like a bottle neck and obstructing the blood flow to the heart. If the plaque is cleared, then the blood flow can be resumed to the heart. The balloon basically forces the plaque to move out of the artery and get spread. It is fragmented into several portions. This process removes the plaque from the coronary artery only. Further it is disbursed into the blood stream again. However, it cannot be guaranteed that the plaque is removed permanently from the body.

The plaque is basically deformed by the procedure. Heat is applied so that the plaque disintegrates. This procedure can become dangerous sometimes. However, in more chronic cases it is necessary to clear the arteries in this procedure. The balloon catheter angioplasty is one of the most effective and easier way to remove plaque from the coronary artery.
