ICU is an intensive care unit where the patient is under the watchful eye of an intensive care nurse, and also administered drugs constantly. Only people who are in a very sensitive situation where there is life is threatened are kept in the ICU. ICU treatment is very expensive and given to patients only when it is absolutely necessary. |
People get admitted into the ICU for different reasons like heart failures, severe injuries, brain related conditions and kidney related conditions. Sometimes a person who just been though a major surgery is also kept in the ICU for observation. In many countries, like the United States and the United Kingdom, hospitals use physical restraints on the patients in the ICU.
The main reason for using a physical restraint is to secure the patient in place. Even though there are quite a few nurses in the ward present at all times, sometimes patients who wake up or gain consciousness suddenly tend to move. They may even walk or do something unpredictable which may hurt them very badly. To prevent them from doing that, physical restraints are used. Often patients who are recovering from a trauma do not remember what happened and it can be a while before they regain their memory.
However, using a physical restraint on intensive care patients is not a completely accepted and encouraged method. It usually causes more problems for the patients like urinary incontinency and other problems. The alternative is that the hospitals can create smaller ICUs and limit the bed count.More Articles :
