Average Cost Of A Day In Critical Care

An intensive care unit is a department in the hospital that gives specialized care and medications to the patient. A person is kept in the ICU only when it is absolutely required. Also, the equipment that is used in an intensive care unit is much more advanced, and is designed for critical care.

People who have been through severe trauma or on the verge of losing their life due to some severe condition are kept in the ICU. Also, if a person is recovering from a major surgery they are kept in the ICU until their condition stabilizes. An ICU typically has an attending intensive care nurse at all times. The person in ICU gets constant medical support and is watched severely. However, a patient cannot get into ICU by choice but only based on the necessity.

ICU is a very expensive ward for insurance companies to pay. They usually take a long time evaluating the necessity for intensive treatment before they pay. A 24 hour trip to ICU can cost nearly $800 a day in premium hospitals, and in more affordable hospitals it can range anything from $280 to $600.

The prices are high because the equipments used to treat a person in the Intensive care units cost a lot. There are several kinds of equipment used here like cardiac monitors, pace makers, ventilators, defibrillators, and dialysis equipment. Running and maintaining these machines can be quite expensive and there fore the rental costs of these machines is also very high.
