A person who is in the intensive care unit of a hospital is usually in critical state. Patients in ICU are often unconscious, and are recovering from a severe trauma or surgery. They are in a delicate state and need extensive care to survive. That is why the intensive care unit of a hospital is treated with a lot of sensitivity. |
The nurses who work in the ICU are fully equipped to deal with life threatening situations of the patient. They are usually specialized in the knowledge and care they are providing. It was found that people who are in the intensive care unit are receptive to pain. There is a critical care observation tool which can estimate the pain through a scoring system. This tool is kept in the ICU and various reactions of the patient are noted by this tool.
The tool uses two methods of assessment. One is when the patient is in conscious state and other while sleeping or unconscious. A tube is inserted into the body to measure the pain. The device functions very similar to the equipment that is used to measure the contractions in the labor room. The findings of the tool specify that the critically ill patients do experience some kind of pain when they are in the intensive care unit when they are unconscious also. There are several different behaviors on a physical and mental level that are associated with pain. The behavior patterns are considered as indicators of pain by the tool.More Articles :
