Critical Care Transport Protocols

A critical care transport unit is a specialized department in the hospital that transports the patients in the critical care wards from one place to another. Sometimes, all the patient's needs cannot be met in one single place.

However, this transfer can take place only with extreme care provided by the critical care transport units. People working in this unit will have to follow a certain protocol set forth by the hospital management and also the doctors. These protocols are also used only in extreme situations and when it is absolutely needed.

The main use of this protocol is to provide intensive care outside the hospital environment or in a pre-hospital or internal hospital environment. At this time the patient is not in the intensive care unit but in transit. The protocol only works if the person who is handling the patient is capable of accurate assessment of the patients condition, judgment and knowledgeable.

The emergency medical service people cannot interfere with the protocol if they are not trained for such a job. The protocols are typically used by personnel who are on the trauma team and handle critical care transport. These protocols may include anything from CPR to administering medications. The critical transport personnel would give the treatment to the patient in spite of not being the intensive care nurse when the patient is in transit and when required. As much as possible, they take orders from the emergency care unit. However, at times when there is a communication lapse, they can act on the treatment plan as standing orders.
