Numerous surgeries, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are part of the patient’s treatment. Because of the advancement of science and technology, several are now contemplated as cancer survivors.
An individual who have been diagnosed with cancer and have been free from this malignant disease is considered as a cancer survivor. But as human knowledge on the disease progresses, the definition has changed. In the new generation, a cancer survivor is someone who has cancer, undergone treatments and is still living.
According to the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, the definition of cancer survivor should be expanded as well to the family and friends who are drastically affected by the numerous changes undergone by the cancer patient. This may include parents, siblings, children, caretakers or any person who also experiences the changes because of the disease and the medications. It is difficult for these individuals as well to understand and strengthen their patience considering the struggles undergone by cancer patients on a day to day basis.
Survivors also include those who were left behind when a cancer patient loses the battle. A lot of changes happen when someone you know are diagnosed with cancer. Almost everybody could be considered as a cancer survivor based on the expanded definition, at one level or another.
