Who Was The First Person To Discover Cancer ?

Hippocrates who is also known as the Father of Medicine is the origin of the term cancer.

Hippocrates used the words carcinoma and carcinos to portray ulcer forming tumors and non ulcer forming tumors. Later, around 28-50 B.C., Celsus changed the Greek terms carcinoma and carcinos to cancer which is also a Latin word for crab.  Another Roman physician named Galen of the 130-200 A.D. used a Greek word oncos to describe tumors.  This term has become part of the name made for cancer specialists - oncologists.

The development of cancer takes place when the cell in any part of the body begins to grow out of control.  Cancer cells are said to transfer to other parts of the body where they originated and replaces the normal tissue. This is the process that is called metastasis.  Here, the cancer cells enter into the lymph vessels or bloodstream of our body.  The growth of cancer cells is due to the damage of DNA.  DNA is found in every cell which directs all cell activities. Oftentimes, the body is capable of repairing damaged DNA but if the cell is cancerous, the body is not able to repair damaged DNA of this type.   Damaged DNA can also be inherited that is why there is hereditary cancer.  Most of the times, DNA’s are damaged because of unhealthy lifestyle such as smoking.

One third of all women and half of all men in the United States of America are prone to a high risk of cancer development in their lives.
