The superficial spreading melanoma is the most common type of all. It accounts to nearly 70 percent of the skin cancers existent. In this type the cancer remains in the top most layer of the skin and spreads rapidly all over the body. It gets deeper into the skin much later.

The acral lentiginous melanoma also spreads on the top most layers before getting deeper into the skin. It is the most common type of melanoma to affect Africans and Asians.

Lentigo maligna stays on the surface of the skin for a long time before spreading into the internal organs.

Nodular melanoma is a type of cancer that comes as a bump and the affects the internal organs directly.
