How Fast Does Melanoma Grow ?

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer. Melanoma affects thousands of Americans, including children, every year. It is just like any other skin cancer.

Cancer is a life threatening condition that causes malignant cells in the body to proliferate. It spreads very fast and the cell division also takes place rapidly.Melanoma can progress and spread either very rapidly or take a long time. Different types of melanomas have different growth rates. Some kinds of melanoma first spread only on the surface of the skin. This phase may continue for months together. Some types of melanoma grow deeper into the skin and these types can progress rapidly.

It depends on the type of melanoma you are dealing with. In order to know, one should get proper diagnosis from a skin specialist otherwise known as dermatologist. The dermatologist will determine the grade of cancer cells. This helps them to understand the behavior of cancer cells and how they are likely to grow. If the cells look extremely abnormal they are called high grade and these grow rapidly. Cancer cells that resemble normal cells are called low grade.

Another thing that is taken into consideration is how many layers of the skin the cancer has spread to. If it has penetrated deep enough, then the chances are it will spread rapidly to other organs. Melanoma gets complicated to treat when it spreads to the fat tissues under the skin. For any type of melanoma, staging of the cancer is the most important step.
