Melanoma is a type of skin cancer. Every year thousands of Americans including children are diagnose with the condition. |
There are different types of melanoma and based on the seriousness they have been classified into four different types. All the types of melanoma show up with initial symptoms on the skin. There are some classic signs of melanoma. However, a proper biopsy report can only confirm the presence of cancerous cells in the skin. Almost all types of melanoma spread on the surface of the skin before they start affecting the internal organs. Only one of its kind starts like a bump and directly affects the tissue and also progresses very rapidly.
Melanoma can be detected if you observe an asymmetrical pattern and if the skin has different shades of skin at one single spot. Also, the diameter of the spot keeps increasing periodically. If you notice any discoloration which is increasing in size, you should contact the doctor immediately.
There are several causes of melanoma including family history of it. If the melanoma is in its early stage, then the prognosis can be good. It is possible to remove the cancerous tissue at this stage. Even if the prognosis says that the melanoma has advanced to the second stage, it can be still curable. As long as the cancer stays on the surface and has not spread to a larger portion of the skin, it can be cured by removing the cancerous skin. Beyond that the treatment options as per prognosis is mainly pain management.
