The first person to ever have discovered melanoma was John Hunter. He was a surgeon by profession, and he first came across the condition in 1787. |
He thought that melanoma was a fungus which was cancerous in nature. Based on his feedback the scientists extracted the tumor and saved it for further tests in the museum of England. In the year 1968, some other scientists put the tumor under a microscope and observed it. They found that it was a metastatic melanoma.
A metastatic melanoma is a type of cancer which started spreading on the outer layer of the skin first and then it gradually spread to the internal organs through the tissues. When the organs within the body are affected by melanoma they stop functioning and shut down completely.
A metastasis melanoma is also called stage IV cancer. It is perhaps the last stage of cancer and the life expectancy at this point is only 18 percent. The person who gave melanoma its name is Rene Laennic. She was the first person to treat it like a real disease. There were several researches being done on the disease to find possible cure.
Henry Lancaster researched further and found that when a person with melanoma is exposed to the ultraviolet rays of the sun their condition can become worse. Also, he noticed that the cancer progressed very fast if the person was exposed to harmful sun rays. Melanoma is still incurable even today. Once a person has been diagnosed with an advanced stage, then only pain management can be done.
