Many people thought that smoking only gives breathing problems and lung cancer. However, it is also one of the main causes of heart disease. |
The more people smoke, the higher their risk of heart disease is. Women who also smoke and are taking birth control pills at the same time have big possibilities of suffering heart attack, stroke and peripheral vascular disease.
Smoking is also a major cause of atherosclerosis wherein fatty substances are built up in the arteries. Atherosclerosis takes place when the linings of the arteries wanes and thickens and when the flow of blood through the arteries is blocked.
Smoking doesn’t only affect smokers but also the people who surround smokers. These people may suffer chronic respiratory conditions, cancer and heart disease.
The nicotine that is found in smoke causes heart disease because of the following reasons: it decreases oxygen to the heart, increases blood pressure and heart rate, increases blood clotting and damages the cells that cover the coronary arteries and other blood vessels.
Studies show that quitting smoke or just cutting down cigarette consumption may eventually boost the health of the heart. According to the American Heart Association, quitting smoke prolongs life. It also reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease thus heart attacks and deaths from heart disease are also decreased by 50 percent or even more. Quitting from smoking could be difficult especially those got addicted from it but if you want to live longer, you have to make choice either you quit or you choose death.
