Heart disease is the number one life taker of women in the United States and the main cause of disability among women as well. |
Women think that cancer is more threatening compared to heart disease but they are wrong. Studies show that more women died because of heart disease in comparison to the number of those who have AIDS and cancer combined.
There are several factors that cause heart disease. Some are controllable and some are not. Controllable risk factors are increasing age, sex, heredity and previous heart attack or stroke. The older a woman becomes, the bigger the possibility of having a heart disease.
The following are the risk factors that can be controlled by having a healthy lifestyle and taking medicines: tobacco smoke, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, obesity and overweight, diabetes mellitus, high triglyceride levels, excessive alcohol intake, and individual responses to stress.
It is as well very important to know the symptoms of heart disease among women. Pressure on the chest which causes breathing difficulty is the most common one. Other signs are: shortness of breath, unusual fatigue, sweating, nausea or vomiting, dizziness or lightheadedness and abdominal, neck, shoulder or upper back discomfort.
Every woman, young or old is at risk to heart disease – no exemptions. It is very important for women to understand the symptoms and to orient themselves with the risk factors so as to fight against the number one cause of death among women. Getting rid of these causes will surely weigh down the risk of having this health condition.
