Endocrinology is the study of the endocrine system. The endocrine system is a group of complex glands with complex functioning. These glands secrete hormones. Together they control the functioning of the body and also effect factors like growth. There are several different types of hormones secreted by the endocrine system. |
These hormones control the metabolism of the body influence the growth pattern and also the central nervous system. Hormones control how a person responds to the surroundings. Some of the hormone secreting glands are pancreas, thyroid, ovaries, testes, adrenal, hypothalamus and pituitary. All these put together form the endocrine system.
A person who has studied endocrinology and understands the functioning of this system is called an endocrinologist. If there is a condition or disease that is associated with these glands the endocrinologist would be able to indicate it. Several conditions are caused by the malfunctioning of hormones. Some of the diseases and conditions caused due to the dysfunction of endocrine system are thyroid, diabetes, menopause, cholesterol, stunted growth, infertility, osteoporosis, obesity, hypertension, cancer of the endocrine glands, and sexual dysfunction. Hormonal imbalances can be identified through blood tests. Based on the symptoms, the endocrinologist would look for certain hormones and if they are in excess or absent.
Some of the most common diseases caused by the endocrine system are thyroid disorders and diabetes. Both these conditions affect millions of Americans every year. However, the best way to control the functioning of the endocrine system is through proper exercise and healthy diet.
