Calcium And The Digestive System

Calcium is an important mineral required for the body. Calcium promotes bone growth and makes the bones stronger in the human body. There are several other uses of calcium for the body. Calcium cements the bones together and gives it a form. It is also a source of communication and provides responses or stimuli for the muscles and nerve cells.

Calcium is available from the food we eat. The main sources of calcium are milk, eggs and meat products. A daily consumption of calcium is very important for all humans. It is the most important mineral that promotes growth in children and young adults. Calcium deficiencies can lead to several health risks including conditions like bone cancer.

The digestive system plays a very important role in the absorption of calcium. It depends on the lumen of the small intestine. Stomach acids convert calcium into a salt and then it is absorbed into the duodenum. Calcium that is not absorbed is then excreted out of the body. The absorption of calcium into the body is mainly channeled through the digestive system. Calcium from the duodenum is absorbed into the cell membranes. Vitamin D also plays a vital role in the absorption of calcium. Some hormones like parathyroid hormones and growth hormones influence the absorption of calcium. When a person has calcium deficiency the body reabsorbs the calcium from the bones. It causes the bones to be weak and break. Sometimes, kidney failure can cause calcium deficiency of extreme levels. It is related to the disease of the digestive tract.
