The main function of the digestive system is to convert food into energy and supply it to the body. There are several parts of the digestive system which together make it possible. Starting from the mouth to the rectum, each of the parts of the human digestive system play an important role in the health of the body. The food you eat takes a long journey before it is converted into energy. |
The esophagus is located in the throat and it receives the food when you swallow from your mouth. The esophagus with the help of some muscular contractions delivers the food you eat to the stomach.
The stomach is like a tank which stores food. It mixes the mashed up food with certain enzymes which break up the food into various forms. The body cannot use food that you eat directly. It has to be converted in the stomach into a usable form. After the food is processed here it reaches the small intestine.
The small intestine has three parts, namely the duodenum, ileum and jejunum. The food is further broken down into various minerals and vitamins required for the body. The jejunum and ileum absorb the nutrients into the blood stream. Here the food is converted into complete liquid form from semi solid. The left over food is moved to the large intestine.
The pancreas is responsible for secreting digestive enzymes that break down the food into fat, proteins and carbohydrates.
The liver plays a vital role in the digestive system by absorbing the nutrients from the small intestine.
The rectum and anus are responsible for excreting the waste from the body.
