The digestive system consists of the digestive tract. The tract is made up of a series of organs that have complex functionalities in converting food into energy. These organs are connected by a long tube from the mouth to the anus. There are some other peripheral organs that help the digestive system to digest the food also. |
The organs that are a part of the digestive system are mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum and anus. The large intestine is also known as the colon. The mouth, stomach and the small intestine contains mucosa which is a lining and secretes juices that help in digesting the food. The digestive tract also contains muscles that help to push the food down the passage.
The digestive system works with two other organs, the liver and the pancreas. They produce digestive juices that get into the small intestine through small opening called ducts. The gall bladder stores these juices from the liver until they are required by the stomach or the intestine. A very small part of the nervous system and the circulatory system play a role in the digestive system.
Digestion is a process of converting the food we eat into consumable energy for the body. In the process the body has to undergo several metabolic activities. Further, it has to break own the food into nutrients, fats, carbohydrates minerals and proteins for various cells of the body. The waste is excreted through the rectum or the anus and then it reaches the kidney.
