What Is Gastroenterology ?

Gastroenterology is a study that involves the diagnosis and the treatment of diseases and conditions related to the digestive tract. The digestive tract is made up of stomach, esophagus, small and large intestines, mouth, rectum and anus. There are several diseases and conditions that affect these organs.

Some of the most common diseases are heartburn, acid reflux disease, gastroenteritis, ulcers, colon cancer, polyps, gallstones, Crohn’s disease and the common indigestion. Gastroentologists diagnose the problems by using specific tests and treat the condition.

To diagnose any elated problem the doctor would need to conduct a complete evaluation of the gastrointestinal tract. It would require a physical examination and also invasive procedures like x-rays. A blood test can also reveal the presence of infections in the digestive tract.

There are some clear symptoms related with the diseases of digestive system. These symptoms are covered in gastroenterology. Some of the common symptom is bad breath, ulcers, boils on the mouth, indigestion, burps, frequent yawning, stomach burns, acidity, flatulence, pain in stomach and abdomen, diarrhea and fatigue. These symptoms usually signify that there is a problem with the digestive tract. Food poisoning and food allergies are the most common reactions of the digestive tract. One has to study gastroenterology in order to treat such symptoms and conditions.

For more serious disorders, endoscopy is conducted to get a clear picture of the digestive tract. The gastroenterology also studies the process of food digestion and what is the normal function of the digestive system in order to treat the problems with it.
