The digestive system is a long tube that is located in the middle of the body. This tube passes right between the ribs. The digestive system is made of different organs that are connected with this long tube. The main organs of the digestive system are the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, rectum, anus, liver, pancreas and gall bladder. |
All these organs are located along the tube to the left and right side of it. For example, the stomach is located to the left side of the tube in the abdomen region. The digestive system literally occupies the middle region of the torso of the human body. The main function of the digestive system is to process the food we eat and break it down into smaller molecules so that the body can absorb the food in the form of energy.
The tube that connects all the organs is called the alimentary canal. The alimentary canal carries this food from one organ to another to be processed. The smooth walls of the canal are made up of muscles which push the food down the tube. From the esophagus, the food is pushed down into the stomach. From the stomach to the small intestine and then to the large intestine and then it is finally excreted out of the body.
The size of the entire digestive tract is close to 30 feet in length in an adult. However, it is not one long tube but it has several folds and is arranged in such a way that fits in the 2 to 3 feet space above the abdomen.
