The effects of alcohol on the nervous system increases or decreases depending on many other factors like age, gender, the general health condition and also if the person is taking some other medications.
As soon as a person consumes alcohol, it starts taking effect because it can directly get into the blood stream. Alcohol has several kinds of effects on the central nervous system like it produces a relaxing effect, it can cause the person to black out temporarily, and it can take away concentration and also reduces motor skill coordination. It causes the nervous system to shut down many of its functions. As a result the person will have slurred speech, feels sleepy, and also becomes highly emotional. The person also becomes incapable of logic and reason. They start appearing more foolish.
Excessive alcohol can cause dehydration and also lead to breathing difficulties, stroke, coma and unconsciousness. Alcohol acts as a depressant on the central nervous system. It attacks several locations in the nervous system like spinal cord, cortex, cerebellum, and the neuro transmitters. It also mixes with the chemicals in the brain and increases chemicals like norepinephrine and dopamine. Chronic use of alcohol can lead to damage of the frontal lobes and cause vitamin deficiencies in the brain.
