The central nervous system has two major organs, the brain and the spinal cord. it is responsible for the involuntary actions, subconscious thinking and the body functions when the body is conscious and unconscious. It is also responsible for making the humans think. It handles all the intellectual functions. |
The central nervous system has millions of nerve cells known as the neurons. Every neuron contains a nucleus and all these are connected through a delicate network of nerves. The central nervous system is a well protected and guarded part of the body. It is protected from external injuries and other damages. However, this does not make it immune to diseases or disorders. The central nervous system is surrounded by something called the cerebral fluid and is protected by layers of tissue called meninges. It is protected by blood as a barrier.
The blood barrier prevents the diseases cells from entering the brain. From the outer side the cranium which is the hard skull protects the central nervous system. It is very hard for external injuries to breach the skull and affect the brain. There are cushioned layers of blood and tissue beneath the hard skull that gives extra protection to the central nervous system. The central nervous system can be harmed due to viral attacks which have not been controlled or genetic problems. Otherwise, it is made to last when it comes to severe falls and injuries. The central nervous system contains the white matter of the brain and the cortex contains the grey matter.
