Nervous system performs several functions in the body. Have you ever wondered how do you recognize, smell, taste, hear, think, breathe, drink, thirst, read, paint and write? All these things are made possible by the nervous system. Whether you are sad or happy, in pain or having a good time, the nervous system is responsible. So what exactly is the nervous system? |
The nervous system is made up of the brain and the spinal cord. It is a huge network of nerves and cells that are spread all over your body. It controls your entire body from the central location. Nothing in your body can move without the knowledge of central nervous system. The brain is continuously processing information that it receives and sending out reactions in the body.
The nervous system is an extremely protected area of the brain. It is kept inside a fort like structure called the cranium or the skull. The nervous system lies behind several layers of tissue and blood walls.
The nerves are thin thread like structures which connect the cells in the body and brain. The nerve cells in the brain are called the neurons. The nerves carry messages back and forth just like a telephone wire. They work similar to the electrical signals and use chemicals in the brain to communicate. Neurons are very thin in structure and vary in sizes. Some are three feet long, while others can be very small. The neurons get stimulated by every sense of touch, feel, smell and sight. That is how we are able to see, feel, cry, and sniff.
